Short Attention Span Sunday School: Primary 6 Lesson 5 Adam and Eve and Their Family Offered Sacrifices

PRIMARY 6 LESSON 5 ADAM AND EVE AND THEIR FAMILY OFFERED SACRIFICES

CLASSROOM PREP

Post on the board:
When we remember God, we act differently.

If you are doing Lesson Option 2 (below) with the movie theme, you could have a sign for the board that indicates a movie theme for class that day! Also show them that you’ve brought in popcorn to snack on during the movies they’ll watch later if they participate well in the lesson portion (which is acting it out/making a movie if you want to give them a heads-up, or have it be a surprise).

OPENING ACTIVITY
We’re going to start off with an activity about remembering.

(if you’re doing the movie theme, you could say this is like the previews when you go to watch a movie)
Remembering things can be really hard sometimes!
I want you to turn to the person next to you.

One of you is going to ask the other four questions in 30 seconds!
Then later we'll switch, but for now pick who will ask this time.
Once picked, pass out a card with the questions written on it for each pair.
Have only the asker-kid look at it.
I’ll set a timer.
You’re going to have to remember those four things about them and you cannot write them down!

Ideas for four easy questions:
Favorite number
Middle name
City where they were born
What they had for dinner the night before

Have everyone report their partner’s answers.
Then set another 30-second timer and have them switch so the other person asks and then has to remember.

What was hard about that activity? Had to figure out how to remember all that information
What was fun or easy about it? Fun to be challenged, fun to find out the answers
When we’re supposed to remember something, usually we have to put some work into it, right?

Sometimes people are really good at remembering names, faces, facts, etc.
Usually when we remember something, we have to use our brain really hard, right?
Could you feel your brain working hard to remember those facts about your friend in class?

To remember God, we have to not only train our spirit but change our spirit.
When our spirits are changed and our hearts are changed, our whole life is changed and we act differently.

Today we’re going to learn about someone who did not remember God...but more importantly we’re going to learn from someone who did not remember God.

The stories in the Old Testament help us learn how to be better in our life!

LESSON OPTION ONE: REGULAR SCRIPTURE READING

Students should follow along and be ready to answer questions about the verses
So today we’re going to talk about two brothers, their names were Cain and Abel.
Some of you may know this story already.

Remember last week we learned about Adam and Eve?
What happened after they ate of fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?
Where did they have to go? Leave the garden, leave God’s presence

Because of their choice, they were in a mortal state where they had to work hard, they had to learn and grow through trials and difficulties, they had to be worthy to have the Lord in their life.

In Moses 5 Verse 1 it says that Adam began to what? Till the earth
And it said he had to eat his bread by what? The sweat of his brow
And at the end of that verse it says that Eve did what? Labor with him

Have you ever seen your mom or dad doing yard work?
Whenever I’m out weeding with my husband, I always think about Adam and Eve.

And it says in verse 2 that they had sons and daughters.
They were fulfilling the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth.

In verse 4 it says that they called upon the name of the Lord.
What does that mean? Pray

In verse 5, it says that they were given commandments - what two commandments were they given?
Worship the Lord their God
Offer the firstlings of their flocks for an offering

They did this and then in verse 6 an angel appears and asks what? Why are you doing this?
And what does Adam say? Have someone read the answer
The angel’s answer is talking about who? Jesus Christ
Similitude means similar to, so the sacrificial lamb is representing Jesus.

In verses 10 and 11 Adam and Eve both express gratitude for their new life.

They recognize it’s hard but they’re saying “were it not for our transgression we never should have had...the joy of our redemption.”

Remember Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy?

So verse 13, who enters the picture again? Satan
He tempted them by saying what? Believe it not

And sadly they did follow him for a time until in verse 14 they were commanded to repent.

So now in verse 16 Cain enters the picture and guess what, he does want to follow Satan.
He says “Who is the Lord that I should know him?”

In verse 17, Abel is mentioned - another son, Cain’s brother.
He did follow the Lord.

Who can tell me what each of these brothers did as their main job in verse 17? Sheep and tiller of the ground

What does it say in verse 18? Cain loved who? Satan more than God
So now we come to a big moment - offerings are made.
What did we learn earlier the offerings needed to be? firstling of the flock

So this means a lamb, a lamb whose blood has been shed.
This is to remind us of the Savior to come.

But Cain does not offer what he’s supposed to.
It was still an offering but it wasn’t the right one and it wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t what was commanded.

Abel did offer what was commanded.

The Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering, but not to Cain and his offering.
Cain was very upset!

What does it say in verse 22? And the Lord said unto Cain: Why art thou wroth? Why is thy countenance fallen?

And here’s a really important moment.
The Lord says, “if thou doest well, thou shalt be accepted.”
The Lord is giving Cain a chance to change his attitude!
But he doesn’t, he rejects that counsel.

In verse 27 it says that Adam and Eve mourned - they were sad that Cain was not following the Lord!

But Cain makes it worse.
He listens to Satan, is tempted by greed for Abel’s sheep and jealousy and he kills Abel out in the field.

The Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel, they brother?
Do you think the Lord already knew the answer? Yes
Cain said, I know not. Am I my brother’s keeper?
The Lord said that he knew Abel had been killed.

Cain was now cursed - no longer would the earth produce food for him.

He shall be a vagabond and a fugitive.
So he will not have a peaceful happy life.

He said Satan tempted him to take his brother’s flocks, he was mad that the Lord didn’t accept his offering.

It says in 3rd Nephi that “ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood,” but rather “ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit.”

This is the kind of attitude we need to have.

So what happened with Cain? Where did he go wrong?

What chances did he have to change his actions and behavior?
- He said he didn’t really want to serve God.
- He listened to Satan.
- He made an offering that wouldn’t be accepted as it wasn’t the commanded sacrifice.
- He was hurt and got angry that he was rejected.
- The Lord gave him a chance to change his attitude but he didn’t.
- He then continued to listen to Satan and was tempted by greed and jealousy and killed his brother.
- He then lied when the Lord asked him about it.

Abel offered what was commanded, the best of what he could offer.
Cain offered less, not the commanded sacrifice.
Why is it important to sacrifice in the way that we’re commanded to?

LESSON OPTION TWO: ACTING IT OUT/MOVIE

Give them the choice - act it out or act it out and have you record it and then watch it right after (if you have that capability with technology you can bring into class).

Print out the script below and highlight the parts so they can see what's coming.
Have them all read through the entire script before acting it out.

You could also just have them act out part(s) of the story, allowing more kids to have parts.

Roles needed:
Narrator (this should be you to keep them on track)
Adam, Eve
Cain, Abel
Angel
Other sons and daughters of Adam and Eve

Remember Adam and Eve?
(Adam and Eve come forward)

After they ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they had to leave the garden and God's presence.

They had to work hard, learn and grow through trials and difficulties.
(Adam and Eve act out hard labor in a garden and express how tired they are!)

Adam began to till the earth and ate his bread by the sweat of his brow.
(Adam acts out really hard work and being sweaty and tired!)

Eve also labored with him!
(Eve also acts out really hard work and being sweaty and tired)

They had sons and daughters.
(Sons and daughters say "Hi Mom and Dad!")

Adam and Eve fulfilled the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth.
They called upon the name of the Lord.
(Adam and Eve silently show that they are praying)

They were given two commandments:
(Adam and Eve say what the commandments are:
"We are commanded to worship the Lord our God and to offer the firstlings of our flocks for an offering")

An angel appeared:
(Angel asks: Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord?)
Adam answered:

(Adam: I know not, save the Lord commanded me.)

The angel answered:
(Angel: This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father.)

Similitude means similar to, so the firstling of the flock is a lamb that represents Jesus.

Adam and Eve are both very grateful for their new life.
(Adam: Blessed be the name of God, for because of my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.)

Then Satan came among them and told them to believe it not.
And they started to love Satan more than God.
But then they repented.

They had more kids, two sons named Cain and Abel.
(Cain and Abel step forward)

Cain is a tiller of the earth/like a farmer and not a good follower of the Lord.
(Cain acts out farming
Cain also says: Who is the Lord that I should know him?)

Abel was a keeper of sheep and he was a good follower of the Lord.
(Abel acts out taking care of sheep and praying)

Satan tells Cain to make an offering. He offers fruit.
(Cain acts this out)

Abel makes an offering of the firstling of his flock.
(Abel acts this out)

The Lord is pleased with Abel's offering but not with Cain's.
This makes Cain very upset!
(Cain: I am so upset!)

The Lord asks Cain: Why art thou wroth? Why is thou countenance fallen?
If thou doest well, thou shalt be accepted.
The Lord gives Cain a chance to change his attitude!
But he doesn't, he rejects this counsel.

Adam and Eve were very sad because of this.
(Adam and Eve show they are so sad about Cain's poor choices)

Cain makes things worse and listens to Satan.
He is tempted by greed for Abel's sheep and jealousy.
(Cain shows his best greedy look and body language)

Cain even goes so far as to kill Abel out in the field.
(Cain gently bops Abel on the head and Abel carefully falls to the floor)

The Lord says unto Cain: Where is Abel, thy brother?

Cain replies:
(Cain: I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?)

The Lord said that he knew Cain had been killed.
Cain would now be cursed and the ground would no longer produce food for him.
(Cain silently shows he is very regretful)

Cain shall be a vagabond and a fugitive and will not have a peaceful happy life.

Cain said unto the Lord:
(Cain: Satan tempted me because of my brother's flocks. And I was wroth also, for his offering thou didst accept and not mine; my punishment is greater than I can bear.)

VIDEO: GOD WILL LIFT US UP
https://www.lds.org/youth/video/lift-us-up?lang=eng (about 5 minutes)

Hand paper out with the below questions printed on, leaving spaces for the answers.
Remove the answers before printing out and format them with space to answer underneath etc.

We're going to watch a video about a girl whose attitude is really impressive.
She could be bitter, she could be resentful, but instead she has a really Christlike attitude of love and humility and she blesses the lives of others.
She is remembering God!

Let them read over the questions first so they’re more easily able to answer quickly while watching.

Remember your earlier promise to hand out popcorn!

What symptoms did Brittany have? Dizzy, nauseous, flu-like

What doesn’t her digestive tract, stomach, and intestines do? Doesn’t move food through

What is the purpose of our life on earth? Grow, develop, and be strengthened

How did Brittany feel at the start of her trials? Bummed, scared, hurt, hard to not be able to eat

Does her dad think it’s been a blessing to her? yes/no (circle one)

Let us not give up on _____ _______. The Lord

COIN/BUTTON OBJECT LESSON (adapted from the manual)

Tell them old movies used to have intermission!
They had to switch out one film reel for another.
This is an intermission!
You could even put up an intermission sign!

Hand out half dollar coins or quarters (or buttons) to each student and have them put them inside one of their shoes.

Go on a little walk in the hallway (remind them to be reverent!)
Take a water break or go outside briefly.

Back in the classroom, ask them if they felt the coin while they were walking.
Were they aware of it in there?
Did they remember they had a coin in their shoe?
Could they see it? How did they remember it was there?

Do you think you would remember it was there after a week? A month?
You’ll remember it because you’ll always feel it.

We can remember Christ by always feeling his influence in our hearts as we choose the right, listen to the Spirit, follow what our prophet says and other leaders too, read the scriptures, and obey our parents, etc.

Draw on the board a big circle.
Tell them that coin is like a big circle. (adapted from a talk by Marlin K Jensen)

First we witness to always remember Him as we partake of the sacrament. (write something on the circle to represent this at the top)

Then in return we are promised His Spirit will always be with us (write something for this around the 3pm mark on the circle)

The Spirit is something that Heavenly Father gave us to “bring all things to our remembrance” (write something around the 6pm spot on the circle)

So then we do remember Him always (write about this around 9pm)
Then you’re worthy to take the Sacrament! And we’re back at the top!!!

Essentially you’re doing a version of the common pride cycle diagram

NEWSCASTER VIDEO
Show this video (about 3 minutes)

You can also have them eat some more popcorn here too.

Hand out blank comic templates and have everyone recreate it in comic form.
https://host-bliss.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/comic-book-template-pdf-template-design-within-comic-book-template-768x995.png

Have them focus on the theme - when she remembered God, she acted differently.

WRAP-UP DISCUSSION

Cain had a chance to change his attitude but he chose not to remember God.
What happens when we choose not to remember God?

When we remember God, we act differently.
Why remember him? We will be blessed with the Holy Ghost
How to remember him? The Holy Ghost can help us see, understand, learn, recognize / Sacrament
What will happen when we remember him? Gratitude will grow, testimony will grow

TESTIMONY/TAKE HOME IDEA
Send them home with little bag with the following inside:

- Drawn out version of the remembrance cycle and the quotation it's based on (below)
- The coin (or button) used in the lesson
- Something for Valentine’s Day (if your lesson falls on 2/11)

We witness always to remember Him as we partake of the sacrament. In return, we are promised His Spirit will always be with us. Interestingly, this is the same Spirit sent by our Heavenly Father to “bring all things to [our] remembrance.” Thus, by worthily receiving the sacrament, we are blessed by the Spirit to enter into a wonderfully beneficial circle of remembering, returning again and again in our thinking and devotion to Christ and His Atonement. - Marlin K. Jensen
