Short Attention Span Sunday School: Primary 6 Lesson 6 Adam and Eve Lived the Gospel of Jesus Christ

PRIMARY 6 LESSON 6 ADAM AND EVE LIVED THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

CLASSROOM PREP

Post sign on the board:

1/Red, white and blue (if you’re in the USA) sign that says Endure To The End with the Olympics rings symbol

2/4th Article of Faith on the board

OPENING ACTIVITY
(something I have done in a previous lesson from Primary 5)

Hold up a popcorn kernel
Last week we had a lot of fun eating popcorn.
Let’s talk a little bit about this guy (refer to the kernel)
What’s inside? It’s the potential to become something else.

How are we like a popcorn kernel?
Remember, there’s a lot of potential in it, but potential to become what?
What does the kernel turn into? a piece of fluffy popcorn
What do we have to add to the kernel? Heat and oil

Faith = getting into the pot
Repentance = moving around in the oil and taking action to repent
Baptism by immersion = oil
Gift of the Holy Ghost = heat
Some kernels use that heat and oil for their benefit and turn into yummy popcorn.
They magnify themselves and find their true potential.
Some kernels don’t take advantage and just lie there and do nothing.
They enjoy the heat and the oil but they don’t do anything with it.

What happens to the ones who turn into yummy popcorn? They make the popcorn-eaters very happy, they find their true purpose

What happens to the ones who don’t take advantage of the heat and oil? They stay a hardened kernel, they aren’t able to reach their potential as fluffy popcorn

We want to be like those kernels that pop and become something better!
We want to endure to the end of the popping!

LESSON - OLYMPICS

Some ideas adapted from here

Welcome to the 2018 Adam and Eve Gospel Olympics!
Play Star Spangled Banner on a phone, tablet, laptop

Today, we’re going to be learning important things about Adam and Eve and the gospel.
And putting ourselves to the Olympics test!

Show them an official Olympic photo of each sport as you go so they get the image in their mind.

Or print out these coloring pages to show them:

1. Torch passing
Flashlight with orange tissue paper attached

What does it mean to “pass the torch”?
Show an image of an Olympic torch bearer.
Let’s think about how Adam was the first man on earth, the first prophet, the first to make the covenants that we make in our life too.
After Adam came many many other prophets, right?
Which prophet just passed away? Monson
Who did the “torch” get passed to after him? Nelson
In this gospel, that torch will never go out, it will never die.
Our Father in Heaven will never leave us without a prophet, without guidance.
In your life, who has passed the torch to you? Your parents, your ancestors, a missionary who taught you or your parents, etc.

As this Olympic torch bearer is in control of the torch, what is everyone counting on them to do? Keep it going, keep it strong, pass it to the next person, be a respectful and admirable holder

In our life too, we need to keep the gospel going in our lives, keep it strong, pass it onto the next generation, and while we do all of that….to be respectable and admirable

So everyone stand up and line up.
I’m going to give the first person the torch and you’re going to run a slow motion circle around the room, and while you do so, you need to say at least one way that you can be a good gospel torch bearer in your life
Ideas if they need help: read the scriptures, pray, attend church, show kindness and charity, etc.
Continue on until everyone’s had a turn.

Now, the gospel in our life is the same gospel that was in Adam and Eve’s life.
Why would the gospel be the same? Based on eternal truths
The gospel we’re basing all of this on - the scriptures, church, kindness, etc. - that gospel is the same gospel that they were taught. The Lord’s plan is an eternal plan, He does not change!

So let’s have some fun learning what Adam and Eve were taught.

2. Skiing - faith
Minifigures, Little People, or figurines of some sort (enough for one per kid) taped or somehow attached to popsicle stick skis and a box ramp down from a chair
Idea from here:
http://www.toddlerapproved.com/2018/01/easy-little-people-ski-ramp-for-kids.html

First, faith!
Does it take faith to strap two metal sticks to your feet and slide down a hill?
Yes indeed!
Why would someone still want to try the first time? They trust their ski instructor, they’re excited to learn, they think it would be fun, they’ve done similar things before, they want to be like a famous skier

When we’re faced with something a little scary or hard that we’ve never done before, we need extra help from Heavenly Father.

We need to use our faith and take action.
If we know how to show our faith, it’s easier.
Maybe we trust our parents or leaders.
Maybe we’re excited to do something and think it will be fun and that motivates us to use our faith.
Maybe we want to be like someone we admire like our Bishop or Primary President.

I have some questions for you about faith.

Two of you line up your skiers at the top of the ramp, and when the right answer is said by either of you, you get to have your skiers go down the hill! It’s not a competition, you’re on the same team.
  • Is faith a principle or ordinance? Principle - a principle is a basic doctrine or law
  • Faith is like a little ______ - what? seed
  • Name one way faith is like a seed you have to take care of it or it won’t grow
  • What’s a way that Adam showed faith? Was obedient to the commandments, raised his children in the gospel, prayed, repented after following Satan
  • How did we show faith in the premortal life? Choosing the Plan of Salvation
  • How can we show faith in this earth life? Similar to torch bearing: scriptures, church, kindness, etc.

3. Snowboarding - repentance
Piece of paper per kid (or whatever you can think of to be a snowboard for them to stand on)

Everyone get on a snowboard! Have them hop “on” their paper or whatever you’ve brought in.
Turn on a fan you’ve brought in, set to low.
Play sound effect on your phone of a blizzard/snowstorm/storm/wind rushing
I’m going to ask a question, and as soon as I’m done with it you need to turn/shift your body on your snowboard. And remember you’re balancing! (act it out for them)

Then when someone answers, you’ll shift on your snowboard.
When I ask the next question, you’ll shift again….and so on.
  • What does it mean to repent? The way provided for us to become free from our sins and to receive forgiveness from them
  • How do we repent? Feel sincere sorry for our sins, stop sinning, keep the commandments
  • What are examples of repentance we’ve learned about with Adam and his family? They followed Satan for awhile and then repented, Cain didn’t repent for his offering
  • Tell me what this scripture means - Moses 6:53 Adam repented and was forgiven
  • How often should we repent? Daily, whenever needed
  • How does taking the Sacrament relate to repentance We renew our baptismal covenants if we are worthy to do so through repentance/the Atonement

4. Luge - baptism by immersion

Do you guys know much about the luge?
Show an image of an athlete on a luge track

The athletes are lying on a fiberglass sled that doesn’t have brakes.
They can go up to 90 miles an hour!

They have to lie perfect flat and know exactly how to shift their body weight to steer the sled.
What ordinance does this position remind you of? Baptism
So what’s an ordinance? a sacred ceremony with spiritual meaning that’s performed by someone with priesthood authority

Adam was also baptized!

5. Ice skating - Gift of the Holy Ghost
Two paper plates per kid

Let’s review what ice skaters do!
They spin, and they jump with a cool poses in mid-air.

Have everyone practice those (make sure they’re spread out away from each other)

I’m going to say something and if it’s true, spin around on your plates without lifting them off the ground.

If it’s false, jump with a cool pose in mid-air.
  • Another name for the Holy Ghost is the Comforter true
  • Adam was not visited by the Holy Ghost in the Garden of Eden false
  • We receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost through the power of the Priesthood true
  • Adam was baptized and he heard a voice out of heaven saying: Thou art baptized with fire and with the _____ _____. Holy Ghost
  • If we haven’t been baptized, we can’t feel the Holy Ghost at all ever! False, someone may feel it temporarily even without the gift of the Holy Ghost
  • The Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit and a member of the Godhead true

6. Hockey - 4th Article of Faith
Puck-shaped block or toy, or a ball

Split up the class and have them sit facing each other on the floor with some clear space in between
Slide the puck/ball back and forth as you sing the Fourth Article of Faith song.
Explain that if their side has the puck, it’s their turn to sing

You could do it this way:
Start off with the puck on one side
Side 1 sings: We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are
Then they slide the puck over
Side 2 sings: First, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
slide the puck over
Side 1 sings: Second, repentance
slide the puck over
Side 2 sings: Third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins
slide the puck over
Side 1 sings: Fourth, laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Ghost

Go through it a few more times, singing faster and faster so they can slide it faster and faster

TESTIMONY/TAKE HOME IDEA

Remember the kernel?

How being obedient and enduring to the end, utilizing what you’re given, you reach your potential and you become something better?

We did a lot of great learning today about principles, ordinances, and enduring to the end.

Faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, and enduring to the end are the steps that are necessary for exaltation, so to be able to live with God.

These were all things Adam was taught - the gospel is the same today too!

Take home ideas:
- medal (edible or toy)
- winter sports-related toy
- something patriotic
- small bag of Fruity Cheerios (colorful rings)

Short Attention Span Sunday School: Primary 6 Lesson 5 Adam and Eve and Their Family Offered Sacrifices

PRIMARY 6 LESSON 5 ADAM AND EVE AND THEIR FAMILY OFFERED SACRIFICES

CLASSROOM PREP

Post on the board:
When we remember God, we act differently.

If you are doing Lesson Option 2 (below) with the movie theme, you could have a sign for the board that indicates a movie theme for class that day! Also show them that you’ve brought in popcorn to snack on during the movies they’ll watch later if they participate well in the lesson portion (which is acting it out/making a movie if you want to give them a heads-up, or have it be a surprise).

OPENING ACTIVITY
We’re going to start off with an activity about remembering.

(if you’re doing the movie theme, you could say this is like the previews when you go to watch a movie)
Remembering things can be really hard sometimes!
I want you to turn to the person next to you.

One of you is going to ask the other four questions in 30 seconds!
Then later we'll switch, but for now pick who will ask this time.
Once picked, pass out a card with the questions written on it for each pair.
Have only the asker-kid look at it.
I’ll set a timer.
You’re going to have to remember those four things about them and you cannot write them down!

Ideas for four easy questions:
Favorite number
Middle name
City where they were born
What they had for dinner the night before

Have everyone report their partner’s answers.
Then set another 30-second timer and have them switch so the other person asks and then has to remember.

What was hard about that activity? Had to figure out how to remember all that information
What was fun or easy about it? Fun to be challenged, fun to find out the answers
When we’re supposed to remember something, usually we have to put some work into it, right?

Sometimes people are really good at remembering names, faces, facts, etc.
Usually when we remember something, we have to use our brain really hard, right?
Could you feel your brain working hard to remember those facts about your friend in class?

To remember God, we have to not only train our spirit but change our spirit.
When our spirits are changed and our hearts are changed, our whole life is changed and we act differently.

Today we’re going to learn about someone who did not remember God...but more importantly we’re going to learn from someone who did not remember God.

The stories in the Old Testament help us learn how to be better in our life!

LESSON OPTION ONE: REGULAR SCRIPTURE READING

Students should follow along and be ready to answer questions about the verses
So today we’re going to talk about two brothers, their names were Cain and Abel.
Some of you may know this story already.

Remember last week we learned about Adam and Eve?
What happened after they ate of fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?
Where did they have to go? Leave the garden, leave God’s presence

Because of their choice, they were in a mortal state where they had to work hard, they had to learn and grow through trials and difficulties, they had to be worthy to have the Lord in their life.

In Moses 5 Verse 1 it says that Adam began to what? Till the earth
And it said he had to eat his bread by what? The sweat of his brow
And at the end of that verse it says that Eve did what? Labor with him

Have you ever seen your mom or dad doing yard work?
Whenever I’m out weeding with my husband, I always think about Adam and Eve.

And it says in verse 2 that they had sons and daughters.
They were fulfilling the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth.

In verse 4 it says that they called upon the name of the Lord.
What does that mean? Pray

In verse 5, it says that they were given commandments - what two commandments were they given?
Worship the Lord their God
Offer the firstlings of their flocks for an offering

They did this and then in verse 6 an angel appears and asks what? Why are you doing this?
And what does Adam say? Have someone read the answer
The angel’s answer is talking about who? Jesus Christ
Similitude means similar to, so the sacrificial lamb is representing Jesus.

In verses 10 and 11 Adam and Eve both express gratitude for their new life.

They recognize it’s hard but they’re saying “were it not for our transgression we never should have had...the joy of our redemption.”

Remember Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy?

So verse 13, who enters the picture again? Satan
He tempted them by saying what? Believe it not

And sadly they did follow him for a time until in verse 14 they were commanded to repent.

So now in verse 16 Cain enters the picture and guess what, he does want to follow Satan.
He says “Who is the Lord that I should know him?”

In verse 17, Abel is mentioned - another son, Cain’s brother.
He did follow the Lord.

Who can tell me what each of these brothers did as their main job in verse 17? Sheep and tiller of the ground

What does it say in verse 18? Cain loved who? Satan more than God
So now we come to a big moment - offerings are made.
What did we learn earlier the offerings needed to be? firstling of the flock

So this means a lamb, a lamb whose blood has been shed.
This is to remind us of the Savior to come.

But Cain does not offer what he’s supposed to.
It was still an offering but it wasn’t the right one and it wasn’t good enough, it wasn’t what was commanded.

Abel did offer what was commanded.

The Lord had respect unto Abel and his offering, but not to Cain and his offering.
Cain was very upset!

What does it say in verse 22? And the Lord said unto Cain: Why art thou wroth? Why is thy countenance fallen?

And here’s a really important moment.
The Lord says, “if thou doest well, thou shalt be accepted.”
The Lord is giving Cain a chance to change his attitude!
But he doesn’t, he rejects that counsel.

In verse 27 it says that Adam and Eve mourned - they were sad that Cain was not following the Lord!

But Cain makes it worse.
He listens to Satan, is tempted by greed for Abel’s sheep and jealousy and he kills Abel out in the field.

The Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel, they brother?
Do you think the Lord already knew the answer? Yes
Cain said, I know not. Am I my brother’s keeper?
The Lord said that he knew Abel had been killed.

Cain was now cursed - no longer would the earth produce food for him.

He shall be a vagabond and a fugitive.
So he will not have a peaceful happy life.

He said Satan tempted him to take his brother’s flocks, he was mad that the Lord didn’t accept his offering.

It says in 3rd Nephi that “ye shall offer up unto me no more the shedding of blood,” but rather “ye shall offer for a sacrifice unto me a broken heart and a contrite spirit.”

This is the kind of attitude we need to have.

So what happened with Cain? Where did he go wrong?

What chances did he have to change his actions and behavior?
- He said he didn’t really want to serve God.
- He listened to Satan.
- He made an offering that wouldn’t be accepted as it wasn’t the commanded sacrifice.
- He was hurt and got angry that he was rejected.
- The Lord gave him a chance to change his attitude but he didn’t.
- He then continued to listen to Satan and was tempted by greed and jealousy and killed his brother.
- He then lied when the Lord asked him about it.

Abel offered what was commanded, the best of what he could offer.
Cain offered less, not the commanded sacrifice.
Why is it important to sacrifice in the way that we’re commanded to?

LESSON OPTION TWO: ACTING IT OUT/MOVIE

Give them the choice - act it out or act it out and have you record it and then watch it right after (if you have that capability with technology you can bring into class).

Print out the script below and highlight the parts so they can see what's coming.
Have them all read through the entire script before acting it out.

You could also just have them act out part(s) of the story, allowing more kids to have parts.

Roles needed:
Narrator (this should be you to keep them on track)
Adam, Eve
Cain, Abel
Angel
Other sons and daughters of Adam and Eve

Remember Adam and Eve?
(Adam and Eve come forward)

After they ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they had to leave the garden and God's presence.

They had to work hard, learn and grow through trials and difficulties.
(Adam and Eve act out hard labor in a garden and express how tired they are!)

Adam began to till the earth and ate his bread by the sweat of his brow.
(Adam acts out really hard work and being sweaty and tired!)

Eve also labored with him!
(Eve also acts out really hard work and being sweaty and tired)

They had sons and daughters.
(Sons and daughters say "Hi Mom and Dad!")

Adam and Eve fulfilled the commandment to multiply and replenish the earth.
They called upon the name of the Lord.
(Adam and Eve silently show that they are praying)

They were given two commandments:
(Adam and Eve say what the commandments are:
"We are commanded to worship the Lord our God and to offer the firstlings of our flocks for an offering")

An angel appeared:
(Angel asks: Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord?)
Adam answered:

(Adam: I know not, save the Lord commanded me.)

The angel answered:
(Angel: This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father.)

Similitude means similar to, so the firstling of the flock is a lamb that represents Jesus.

Adam and Eve are both very grateful for their new life.
(Adam: Blessed be the name of God, for because of my transgression my eyes are opened, and in this life I shall have joy, and again in the flesh I shall see God.)

Then Satan came among them and told them to believe it not.
And they started to love Satan more than God.
But then they repented.

They had more kids, two sons named Cain and Abel.
(Cain and Abel step forward)

Cain is a tiller of the earth/like a farmer and not a good follower of the Lord.
(Cain acts out farming
Cain also says: Who is the Lord that I should know him?)

Abel was a keeper of sheep and he was a good follower of the Lord.
(Abel acts out taking care of sheep and praying)

Satan tells Cain to make an offering. He offers fruit.
(Cain acts this out)

Abel makes an offering of the firstling of his flock.
(Abel acts this out)

The Lord is pleased with Abel's offering but not with Cain's.
This makes Cain very upset!
(Cain: I am so upset!)

The Lord asks Cain: Why art thou wroth? Why is thou countenance fallen?
If thou doest well, thou shalt be accepted.
The Lord gives Cain a chance to change his attitude!
But he doesn't, he rejects this counsel.

Adam and Eve were very sad because of this.
(Adam and Eve show they are so sad about Cain's poor choices)

Cain makes things worse and listens to Satan.
He is tempted by greed for Abel's sheep and jealousy.
(Cain shows his best greedy look and body language)

Cain even goes so far as to kill Abel out in the field.
(Cain gently bops Abel on the head and Abel carefully falls to the floor)

The Lord says unto Cain: Where is Abel, thy brother?

Cain replies:
(Cain: I know not. Am I my brother's keeper?)

The Lord said that he knew Cain had been killed.
Cain would now be cursed and the ground would no longer produce food for him.
(Cain silently shows he is very regretful)

Cain shall be a vagabond and a fugitive and will not have a peaceful happy life.

Cain said unto the Lord:
(Cain: Satan tempted me because of my brother's flocks. And I was wroth also, for his offering thou didst accept and not mine; my punishment is greater than I can bear.)

VIDEO: GOD WILL LIFT US UP
https://www.lds.org/youth/video/lift-us-up?lang=eng (about 5 minutes)

Hand paper out with the below questions printed on, leaving spaces for the answers.
Remove the answers before printing out and format them with space to answer underneath etc.

We're going to watch a video about a girl whose attitude is really impressive.
She could be bitter, she could be resentful, but instead she has a really Christlike attitude of love and humility and she blesses the lives of others.
She is remembering God!

Let them read over the questions first so they’re more easily able to answer quickly while watching.

Remember your earlier promise to hand out popcorn!

What symptoms did Brittany have? Dizzy, nauseous, flu-like

What doesn’t her digestive tract, stomach, and intestines do? Doesn’t move food through

What is the purpose of our life on earth? Grow, develop, and be strengthened

How did Brittany feel at the start of her trials? Bummed, scared, hurt, hard to not be able to eat

Does her dad think it’s been a blessing to her? yes/no (circle one)

Does Brittany want opportunities to bless the lives of others? yes/no (circle one)

Did she find a way to help others? yes/no (circle one)

What is the purpose of her coloring book? To let other kids know they’re not the only ones

Why do you think it meant a lot to her when her sock monkey made her sick friend happy?

“The more that you spend focusing on yourself, the more likely you are to ______ into a _____.” fall / rut

“Reaching out to others, you really _____ your own problems.” forget

While Brittany’s reaching out to others, she feels the Spirit telling her that __________ what she’s doing is a good thing

Brittany’s mom says she’s taken on her trial with ______ and ______. Grace and strength

Time and time again, has Brittany has seen Heavenly Father and the Lord’s hands in her life? yes / no (circle one)

Let us not give up on _____ _______. The Lord

COIN/BUTTON OBJECT LESSON (adapted from the manual)

Tell them old movies used to have intermission!
They had to switch out one film reel for another.
This is an intermission!
You could even put up an intermission sign!

Hand out half dollar coins or quarters (or buttons) to each student and have them put them inside one of their shoes.

Go on a little walk in the hallway (remind them to be reverent!)
Take a water break or go outside briefly.

Back in the classroom, ask them if they felt the coin while they were walking.
Were they aware of it in there?
Did they remember they had a coin in their shoe?
Could they see it? How did they remember it was there?

Do you think you would remember it was there after a week? A month?
You’ll remember it because you’ll always feel it.

We can remember Christ by always feeling his influence in our hearts as we choose the right, listen to the Spirit, follow what our prophet says and other leaders too, read the scriptures, and obey our parents, etc.

Draw on the board a big circle.
Tell them that coin is like a big circle. (adapted from a talk by Marlin K Jensen)

First we witness to always remember Him as we partake of the sacrament. (write something on the circle to represent this at the top)

Then in return we are promised His Spirit will always be with us (write something for this around the 3pm mark on the circle)

The Spirit is something that Heavenly Father gave us to “bring all things to our remembrance” (write something around the 6pm spot on the circle)

So then we do remember Him always (write about this around 9pm)
Then you’re worthy to take the Sacrament! And we’re back at the top!!!

Essentially you’re doing a version of the common pride cycle diagram

NEWSCASTER VIDEO
Show this video (about 3 minutes)

You can also have them eat some more popcorn here too.
https://www.lds.org/media-library/video/2014-01-001-abide-with-me?lang=eng

Hand out blank comic templates and have everyone recreate it in comic form.
https://host-bliss.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/comic-book-template-pdf-template-design-within-comic-book-template-768x995.png

Have them focus on the theme - when she remembered God, she acted differently.

WRAP-UP DISCUSSION

Cain had a chance to change his attitude but he chose not to remember God.
What happens when we choose not to remember God?

When we remember God, we act differently.
Why remember him? We will be blessed with the Holy Ghost
How to remember him? The Holy Ghost can help us see, understand, learn, recognize / Sacrament
What will happen when we remember him? Gratitude will grow, testimony will grow

TESTIMONY/TAKE HOME IDEA
Send them home with little bag with the following inside:

- Drawn out version of the remembrance cycle and the quotation it's based on (below)
- The coin (or button) used in the lesson
- Something for Valentine’s Day (if your lesson falls on 2/11)

We witness always to remember Him as we partake of the sacrament. In return, we are promised His Spirit will always be with us. Interestingly, this is the same Spirit sent by our Heavenly Father to “bring all things to [our] remembrance.” Thus, by worthily receiving the sacrament, we are blessed by the Spirit to enter into a wonderfully beneficial circle of remembering, returning again and again in our thinking and devotion to Christ and His Atonement. - Marlin K. Jensen
