Short Attention Span Sunday School: Primary 5 Lesson 10 The Book of Mormon is Published

PRIMARY 5 LESSON 10 THE BOOK OF MORMON IS PUBLISHED

CLASSROOM PREP
Draw on the board a picture of arch made of separate stones/bricks
Also write: “Welcome to Grandin Press”

OPENING ACTIVITY - MIRROR IMAGE PUZZLE SOLVING
Prior to this lesson, use Microsoft Word Art (create your text, go to Drawing Tools, go to Text Effects, 3D rotation, options, and under X type in 180) or a website to mirror the image and flip everything so the words and the letters are both flipped. Do this for each bullet point below.

Post these one at a time and ask “What does this say?” (hoping they'll really enjoy solving these puzzles):
  • The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ
  • “And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.” Moroni 10:5
  • “And those who receive it in faith, and work righteousness, shall receive a crown of eternal life” D&C 20:14
  • “The book was written by many ancient prophets by the spirit of prophecy and revelation.” - Introduction to the Book of Mormon
  • “Thou shalt not covet thine own property, but impart it freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon, which contains the truth and the word of God” - D&C 19:26
  • We are in the __________ Class in the __________ Ward in the __________ Stake. We live in __________.
  • Our Bishop’s name is Bishop __________. Our Primary President’s name is Sister __________. Our Music Leader’s name is Sister __________. Our Primary Teacher’s name is Sister __________.

PUBLICATION STORY FROM THE MANUAL
What we’re going to learn about today is how the Book of Mormon (hold up the missionary blue-cover copy) was published!

Tell the story of the publication from the manual using church artwork and my own drawings.

GRANDIN PRESS EMPLOYEE INTRO
You are all now hired as employees at Grandin Press!
- Welcome to your new job!
- We live in 1830, the year the Book of Mormon was published.
- Pick a name tag and write your new 1830s name
- Here are the name choices for the girls (post up printout). These were the most popular girl names in 1830. Harriet Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, Catherine, Margaret, Jane, Emily, Caroline, Martha, Charlotte, Rebecca, Ellen, Frances
- Here are the name choices for the boys (post up printout). These were the most popular boy names in 1830. John, William, Thomas, James, Robert, Richard

We’re now going to do new employee training!

Training schedule posted on the board:
  1. How does a printing press work?
  2. Practicing typesetting your name
  3. Quiz on what you have learned
  4. Making a book

TRAINING
1. How does a printing press work?
Watch videos (download prior to class so you aren't relying on church Wi-Fi) and discuss what you see.

Look at this site and study it together

2. Name practice
Pass out to each kid: one glue stick, blank piece of paper, and a Ziploc with their name print out with mirrored letters that have been individually cut out.

They will glue their name in backwards letters in a backwards order as if it was going on a printing press

3. Quiz on what they have learned (printed out, handed out with a pen)
Questions:
1. What have you learned about how a printing press works?
2. How long do you think it would take to print one book?
3. How many copies did Joseph Smith want printed? (5,000)
4. What city was Grandin Press in? (Palmyra)
5. Who had to guarantee the payment that included part of his farm? (Martin Harris)
6. How much did the 5,000 copies cost to print? ($3000)
7. What would you like about working at Grandin Press?
8. If you could write and print any book, what would you want that book to be about?

4. Make their own books
Use the method in the manual
Get a large piece of paper (larger than 8.5 x 11 but not too stiff) for each kid and work on making a book. They get to write what they want in it as long as it’s related to a church topic. They can also finish this at home.

DISCUSSION
Discuss the arch on the board and point out the keystone.
What does a keystone do?
A central stone in an arch
It holds all the other stones in place, and if removed the arch crumbles

Why do you think the Book of Mormon is called the keystone of our religion?

Talk about the blessings of having the Book of Mormon
Why should we gain a testimony of it?
How should we gain a testimony of it?

What can we do to show our gratitude for it? How about sharing it with others? Who can you give a copy of the Book of Mormon to this year?

SNACK
Alphabet cookies, Scrabble Cheez-Its, Alphabits cereal, bread dough shaped into letters....something like that - smack on those while watching the below videos if time.
