CLASSROOM PREP

Put up image of President Monson

Construct an easy quick tent in your classroom that will house all the kids in your class.

Either a pop-up tent you own, or a quick rope/sheet combination (secured from doorknob to window lever, drape a sheet over, secure the 4 corners down with chair legs, etc.), or another method.
Be sure that your tent’s opening is facing wherever your image of President Monson is (if you have the front facing the board, put his image there...if it’s facing a wall, put his image there).

Let them inside the tent to start for fun to get their excitement out, then have them sit in chairs for the lesson part.

OPENING ACTIVITY

Enrichment Activity 1 from the Manual
Print/write out each statement on a separate piece of paper
Ask them to put it in the right order

  1. Jesus Christ reveals his will to the prophet.
  2. The prophet tells us what Jesus Christ wants us to do.
  3. We listen to the prophet.
  4. We do what the prophet says.
  5. We someday return to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Talk about how you can’t skip step 4!
In order to reach 5, you must listen to him AND do what he says.

LESSON

Illustrate to help their attention span.

Also choose appropriate sections of this Church movie to show, if you feel your class would benefit. Some parts might be too graphic for your age group.

Let’s remember where the story last left off…remember the governor told them he wouldn’t keep his promise and he didn’t help the Saints in Missouri with the mobs? He told them to create their own army of members to fight against the mobs, Joseph Smith and other marched from Ohio…but then they were told through revelation to not fight?

So after the Saints were told to leave Jackson County, the moved to a different part of Missouri.
But there were problems there too.

In August 1838, there was an election day.

What’s an election day? discuss
What does it mean to elect? discuss
In a town called Gallatin, there was a place to vote.
Some Church members went to Gallatin to cast their vote but there was a mob there to try to stop them.
Why do you think they didn’t want them to vote?
Remember we talked awhile ago about how sometimes people who get afraid of things act out in anger? So fear can lead to anger?
These mob men were afraid that the Saints would vote for someone and the person the mob wanted to win wouldn’t win.
A man from the mob knocked down one of the Saints and a fight started. Many got hurt!
The next day, people were talking about the fight and details got exaggerated. Some were saying that people died! That wasn’t true.
Joseph Smith and other people went over and found out the truth, that no one had been killed.
Mob men lied that the Church members started the fight.
These reports went to the governor - no longer Governor Dunklin but a new governor, Governor Boggs.

The mob wanted to attack the Saints!
In DeWitt, members asked the governor for help but he didn’t answer.
Joseph Smith was worried about the Saints in DeWitt and he found his people were trying to deal with the mob and weren’t getting food etc. The governor wasn’t helping and wanted them to fight it out.
They decided to leave DeWitt instead, and packed up 70 wagons and left.

Who do you think was happy about that? The mob

They decided to attack Adam-ondi-Ahman next. Remember we learned about that city?
They tied up Church members, burned down their house, and chased away their animals.

Then they were planning to attack Far West, another city with Church members.
They attacked homes near Far West and took prisoners and told the rest of the people to leave.
Thankfully the prisoners were rescued!

The governor kept hearing lies about how the Church members were doing all the bad stuff.
All over northern Missouri, mobs were attacking Church members, setting fire to houses and crops, stealing cattle, taking prisoners...but the governor was told the Church members were doing it all!
He ordered his troops to fight against the Saints!
He signed papers that said everyone should treat Church members as enemies! It was called an “Extermination Order” -- extermination means to get rid of something!
People in Missouri were ready to get rid of the Saints!

The Prophet told everyone to move into Far West or Adam-ondi-Ahman for protection.
But not everyone listened.
There was a man named Jacob Haun who founded a small town called Haun's Mill.
He didn’t want to leave!
He ignored the Prophet! He also told other people to stay, too!
They tried to protect their little town.
Other people stopped there on their way to Far West - they were following the Prophet. They decided to stop at this little town because people were there. Those people shouldn’t have been there, of course.
That afternoon, 240 men attacked Haun’s Mill.
Many ran away, but many were killed by the mob.

A day later, some Missouri guys surrounded Far West.
General Lucas took the Church leaders prisoner and ordered that they be killed!
But a friend of the Saints, General Doniphan, refused and told General Lucas to not hold the execution.

The Saints were ordered to leave the entire state of Missouri!
But they were allowed to stay in Far West through the winter if they promised to leave after that.

Do we always avoid problems if we follow the prophet?
Church members who followed the Prophet still suffered persecution in Missouri and even the Prophet suffered. Sometimes we suffer because of the bad choices of others -- we all have free agency.
But if we follow the prophet, we can avoid some suffering from our own choices that are bad!

TENT INTRODUCTION

Let them all go sit inside!
Why do you think we have a tent in class today?
There was a prophet named King Benjamin in the Book of Mormon. Show image
He was a righteous prophet who preached to his people on a tall tower so they could all hear.
They came with their families to hear him and pitched their tents so the opening was towards where he was speaking.

How does it feel when you’re speaking with someone and they aren’t looking at you or facing you?
What about when they look at you and give you their full attention? Does that tell you they really care?

How can we “pitch our tent” towards President Monson? Listen to him, follow him, spend time reading his words, praying for him

TENT ACTIVITY: PRESIDENT MONSON VIDEOS

So while you’re in your tent, let’s hear from our current prophet Thomas S. Monson.

It’s important to recognize that he is an ordinary man doing extraordinary things as the leader of our Church! The more we get to know him, the more we’ll be inspired to follow his words and example.

Let’s listen to his words as if he’s King Benjamin on the tower.
You could bring in a tall tower-like paper structure to tape up onto the wall under his picture at this point, as if he’s on a tall pulpit/tower.

Just for fun, give them some snacks to eat while they’re in the tent watching the videos and listening to the stories.

TESTIMONY/TAKE HOME

Refer back to the opening activity where you put things in order.
Bear your testimony about the importance of following the prophet, of listening to his words, and then doing what he says and following him!

Send them home with a bag of:
1/This image printed out:

2/A small Hershey’s bar, a marshmallow, and a graham cracker and have a note about “Talk with your family about s’more ways to follow the prophet!”
